The methods described are used for the treatment and diagnosis of ischemic heart disease. The present invention is based on the discovery that Chlamydia infections, particularly infections due to the TWAR strain of Chlamydia, play an important role in the pathogenesis of ischemic heart disease. The methods use a drug treatment and testing or examination of operations for determining the presence of Chlamydia or Chlamydia antibody. Pharmaceutical preparations against infection caused by Chlamydia in ischemic heart disease are also the subject of a claim.
