An arrangement for adjusting the switching threshold of capacitive proximity switches uses a plastic model structure (19) of the material to be detected which models the dielectric constant and dimensions of the material. A mounting enables the proximity sensor's (10) sensing surface to be held in contact with the model structure for the purpose of adjusting the switching threshold. A display device (30,31) indicates the threshold visually and/or acoustically. USE/ADVANTAGE - For adjusting switching threshold of capacitive proximity switches used for material detection. Method enables switching threshold to be adjusted remotely.
