An electronic spirit level has a frame (1) with an orientation line (19) which can be definitively aligned w.r.t. a measurement plane. An electronic sensor (2) detects relative motion between itself and a signal generator (3). Either the sensor or transducer is suspended relative to the frame under the effect of gravity and the other component is fixed w.r.t. the frame. The signal generator is a magnet, pref. a permanent magnet, and the sensor is a magnetic field sensor. USE/ADVANTAGE - Electronic spirit level is relatively insensitive to external mechanical influences and has very high measurement sensitivity.
