Polyester alcohols (I) contg. repeating structural units of formulae (1), (2), (3) (4) or (5) are claimed:--C(:O)-p-C6H4-C(:O)-O-(R-O)n- (1) -C(:O)-p-C6H4-C(:O)-R1(R3)2O-C(:O)-R2-C(:O)-O- (2) -C(:O)-p-C6H4-C(:O)-O-R4(R3)-O-C(:O)-R2-C(:O)-O- (3) -O-R1 (R3R3)-O-C(:O)-R2-C(:O)-O-(R-O)n- (4) or -O-R4R3-O-C(:O)-R2-C(:O)-O-(R-O)n-(5) n = 1-8; when n = 1,R = -CH2CH2-, -CH2CH(Me)-, or -(CH2)m- where m = 4-6; when n is more than 1, R = -CH2CH2- and/or -CH2CH(Me)-; R1 = -CH2-C(CH2-)(CH2O-)-O-CH2-O-; R2 = O-C6H4- or -CH:CH-; R3 = H- or -C(:O)-R2-C(:O)-O-; R4 = = -CH2-C(O-)(H)-CH2-, Rt-C(CH2-O-)-(CH2-)2, -CH2-C(Me)(CH2-O-)-CH2-, -CH2CH2-N(CH2CH2-O-)-CH2CH2-, and/or -(CH2)4C(O-)H)-CH2-. Prepn. of polyester alcohols, partic. (I) from polyethylene terephthalate (II) waste by alcoholysis, acidolysis, and transesterification with heating in presence of aliphatic diols, adducts (III) of acid anhydrides with triols and tetrols, and of catalysts under vacuum. Pref. ratio (III):diol:(II) = 0.007-10.5:0.5-10.5: 1.0.
