In the case of a programmable-memory control device for acting on and monitoring a machine process sequence or sequences, consisting of a central processing unit, memories which are connected thereto or are contained therein, a plurality of inputs/outputs, it being possible to connect some of the inputs to the outputs of a peripheral, separate programming unit which is provided with an alphanumeric input keyboard, and it being possible to connect a further portion of the inputs/outputs to further peripheral apparatuses. In order to construct such a control device such that it is suitable for processing alphanumeric information, especially texts which can be input freely, but which at the same time can be produced and retrofitted cost-effectively and can be operated simply, conveniently and, in particular, without programming knowledge, the input/output unit 26 has a separate alphanumeric display 27 and a separate memory (text memory 28), the programming input 35 of the separate memory (text memory 28) of the input/output unit 26 can be temporarily connected to the programming unit for the entry of text elements which lead the operator, and the separate memory (text memory 28) can be selected exclusively either via a plurality of text-program keys 30 of the input/output unit 26 (which are allocated to specific text elements in software terms) or via the central processor unit 3, in order to call up the text elements, the selected text element [lacuna] on the separate alphanumeric ...
