In an image converter for UV or X-ray images, the novelty is that (i) the photocathode and the screen are closely spaced: (ii) the photocathode comprises a thin film sequence of a base electrode film with low absorption for the primary image generating radiation, an insulation film, a semiconductor film and a top electrode film, provided on a non-conductive substrate which is transparent to the UV and x-radiation; (iii) the image points of the primary image are formed of intersection regions of the base and top electrode films on thinned (max. 40mm thick) local areas of the top electrode film; and (iv) a large area electrical contact is provided on the screen. ADVANTAGE - The image converter operates stably at high power, provides simplified electro-optical imaging and allows existing electronic information to be written on the same screen as the converted UV or X-ray image.
