The invention relates to a coating composition for newsprint, having excellent properties for offset printing when used in fast-scrolling web offset printing of the cooling-drying type, such as tearing, printing gloss and printability. This composition comprises, per 100 parts by weight of a pigment, preferably 50% by weight or more is constituted by a clay, from 3 to 50 parts by weight, and preferably from 5 to 40 parts by weight, in solids of an amphoteric copolymer latex obtained by copolymerization of an ethylenically unsaturated amine with butadiene or the like. This composition may contain at most 15 parts by weight, preferably at most 10 parts by weight, of a water-soluble polymer binder such as starch esterified with a phosphoric acid, in addition to the amphoteric copolymer latex, but in an amount such as the total amount of pigment binders is from 3 to 50 parts by weight, in solids, per 100 parts by weight of pigment.
