Benzofuran derivs. of formula (I) and their salts are new, R = gp. (i), R1 = H, hal, COOH,CONH2, CHO, CN, NH2 or 5-tetrazolyl; R2 = H, COOH, COOR3, CN, NO2, NH2, NHCOCF3, NHSO2CF3, or 5-tetrazolyl; R3 = H, alkyl, alkenyl or alkynyl, each contg. up to 6C; R4 = H, 1-6C alkyl, cyano-alkyl, R3OOC-alkyl, 5-tetrazolylalkyl or Ar-alkyl each alkyl gp. contg. 1-6C; A-B-C-D is CH=CHCH=N, CH=CH N=CH N=CHCH=CH, CH=CH CONR4; CH=CHNR4CO, CONR4CH=CH or NR4 COCH=CH, in which the H atoms of the CH gps. are substd. with 1-6C alkyl, halogen, COOR3, CN and/or S-tetrazolyl; Ar = Ph opt. mono- or di-substd. with halogen, R3, CF3, COOR3, CN, OR3, NO2, NH2, NHCOCF3, NHSO2 CF3 or 5-tetrazolyl. USE/ADVANTAGE - (I) have angiotensin II antagonistic properties and can be used to treat angiotensin II dependent hypertension, aldosteronism and cardiac insufficiency and disorders of the CNS. In partic. (I) can be used for the prophylaxis and therapy of hypertonia, cardiac insufficiency, hyperaldosteronism, hypertrophy and hyperplasia of blood vessels and the heart, angina pectoris, cardiac infarction, strokes resteosis after angioplasty or by-pass operation, arteriosclerosis, increased inner eye pressure, glaucoma, muscular degeneration, hyperuricaemia, kidney function disorders e.g. kidney failure, nephropathiadiabetic, retinopathia diabetica, psoriasis, angiotensin II mediated disorders in female fertility organs, cognitive disorders, e.g. dementia, amnesia, memory disorders, anxiety conditions, depressions, and/or epilepsy. Suitable daily doses are 0.1-50 (esp. 1-100) mg/kg.
