DETONATION ARRESTOR WITH COOLING SECTION AND QUENCHINGSECTION, AND METHOD OF COOLING AND QUENCHING A FLAMEFRONT TRAVELLING IN A LINE CARRYING FLAMMABLE GASROBERT KARL RAJEWSKIABSTRACTA detonation arrestor for a line carrying acombustible gas includes a cell housing having a portionthat is directed to quenching a detonation front and aportion that is directed primarily to heat absorption sothat the heat of a continuous or prolonged burn can bewithstood. The quenching portion may be a porousquenching medium. The heat absorption section contains alarge mass of metal with porous channels through orbetween them. An example is a plurality of closely spacedstacked plates, which may be helically wound or planeparallel plates. Crimped ribbon or other spacers mayseparate them. As an alternative to the quenching medium,the plates may extend long enough to allow flame frontsto be quenched between them. The detonation arrestor issymmetrical and may be placed in the flare line in eitherdirection. If particulate quenching medium is used, adeflector ring encircles the interior of the cell housingand prevents flame fronts from flashing along the edge ofthe cell housing.
