PURPOSE: To provide an apparently excellent lubrication effect, reduce cutting resistance and improve cutting accuracy by cutting a workpiece so as to have a period having a positive velocity component in the cutting chip flowing direction in the range in which a cutting tool has a positive velocity component in the cutting direction in relation to the workpiece. ;CONSTITUTION: A vibrational cutting device is provided with a first actuator 2 which vibrates in the direction to which cutting chip flows (in a thrust force direction) and a second actuator 3 which vibrates in a cutting direction. By controlling the actuators 2 and 3 by means of an operation controlling means 8, a cutting tool 1 is made to perform a cyclic operation which has both velocity components of a thrust force direction FV and cutting force direction FH in the plane specified by the cutting direction and thrust force direction. This causes a period to exist, in which cutting chips slide in the direction opposite to the direction which the cutting face of the cutting tool 1 slides upward (in the direction in which the cutting face 10 of the cutting tool 1 separates from a workpiece 4) in a conventional cutting method to cutting chips 4a when the cutting chips 4a are produced, substantially improving machinability of the workpiece.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1995,JPO
