A machine-dependent high resolution digital screen recorder 12 is disclosed that provides a high quality video display with manageable storage capability and bandwidth. The screen recorder includes an analog-to-digital frame grabber 24 for converting a high resolution video signal 20 that modulates the video display 14 into an RGB sequence of digital frames. The video compression unit 26 separates the high and low displacement portions of the digital frame and encodes them into lossy 56 and lossless 54 compression algorithms and stores them in the mass storage 28.
