The present invention refers to the use of ganglioside GM₁ or the derivative thereof, the N-dichloroacetyl lyso GM₁ (LIGA 20) for preventing or reversing neuronal degeneration induced by a long term treatment with L-DOPA in the therapy of Parkinson's disease.
