Synthetic muteins which possess the biological activity which is characteristic of human tumour necrosis factor (hTNF), in which muteins at least one of the two cysteine residues is removed or replaced with another amino acid in order to eliminate the possibilities of intermolecular crosslinking. Furthermore, synthetic structural genes are provided which possess DNA sequences which have been specifically designed to encode the abovementioned synthetic hTNF muteins. IMAGE
