The invention features inducible expression of a polynucleotide encoding, especially a polypeptide such as VSV G which is cytotoxic to the host cell in which it is expressed. The polynucleotide is operably linked to inducible promoters and to polynucleotides encoding tetR and Tn10 and to negative and positive ligand binding domain transcription regulatory elements such as from steroids (including the estrogen receptor).
