PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject composition which is effective as an antioxidant and useful for improving or maintaining the appearance of skin or scalp by using melatonin or its analogue in an amount almost equal to or less than the physiological dose. ;SOLUTION: The content of melatonin or its analogue in this composition is set so that its concentration may become 10^-15-10^-7M, after topical application, a physiological dose, strictly ≤10^-4wt.%, at the optimal dose that the melatonin or its analogue permeates through the skin. 5-methoxytryptamine, 5-methoxytryptophane, 5-methoxytryptophol, 5-methoxyindole 3-acetate or 6- hydroxymelanin is preferably used as a melatonin analogue.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1998,JPO
