DETECTION OF HUMAN PAPILLOMAVIRUS DNA AND ITS EXPRESSION IN CERVICAL SMEARS

The invention relates to the direct detection of humanpapilomavirus DNA. The recently developed polymerasechain reaction was modified in order to improve thesensitivity and specificity. By choosing appropriateoligonucleotide primers (amplimers) and reactiontemperatures, individual HPV genes from among the total cell DNAcan be identified and amplified to an extent such thatnon-isotopic detection is possible. In addition, use ofreverse transcription permits selective amplification ofspliced mRNA and thus permits indication of premalignantor malignant conditions and/or lesions.
