Differentiation of living and dead microorganisms by fluorescence microscopy after fixing and staining with acridine orange

Method for distinguishing between living and dead microorganisms comprises fixing a clinical specimen with paraformglutaraldehyde (sic), staining it with acridine orange, and examining it with a fluorescence microscope.
