The use of a DNA sequence (I), derived from the glucosylglycerol phosphate synthase gene, with preferably more than 90% identity to an amino acid sequence corresponding to the 1500 base pair sequence, fully defined in the specification, to generate glucosylglycerol in plant culture. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a transgenic plant (II) carrying (I), which generates economical quantities of glucosylglycerol; and (2) glucosylglycerol manufactured by (II).
