The method involves varying the pulse height, pulse length, repetition frequency of average pulse height of a pulsed laser or light diode (2), either manually or automatically, or as a function of another parameter, e.g. patient blood pressure, to produce a constant average power. Functions simulating continuous wave functions may also be used to drive the laser diode. The method can use a predetermined or adjustable parameter level, a time variation of one or more parameters or a variation of a parameter with respect to data or measured values.
