A system and method of utilizing a computer network to track individual investor's investments and to generate certain alerts and buy, sell and hold signals based on individual preferences and tax considerations (2). The user enters data relating to their investment portfolio and selects individual preferences. The invention calculates the user's capital gain situation (6) and based on that situation and other indicators such as time of year, paper gains (6) or losses (7), etc., generates alerts and signals to the user advising the user to buy, sell or hold individual securities. The signals are graphically displayed to the investor in a color coded power bar. The investor is able to click on the signals and obtained more detailed information regarding the buy, sell or hold signal. A tax event calendar is also generated that advises the investor of important tax dates including dates estimated quarterly payments are due, the date an investment converts from short-term to long term (5) and the data applicability of the wash sale rule expires.
