PURPOSE: A friction transmission device having a simple planetary roller mechanism and a braking mechanism is provided to connect a braking mechanism of optimum capacity, to secure dependable braking capability and to attempt sharp cost-down. CONSTITUTION: A friction transmission device(20) consists of a simple planetary roller mechanism(28) having a sun roller(30), a planetary roller(34) and a ring roller(36) as friction rollers, and a braking mechanism(22). A test torque is gradually increased and input in the sun roller under the state where a static friction torque(Y) that can be taken out by the braking mechanism, a carrier(32) and the ring roller are fixed. The test torque value(Xd) where the first sliding rotation is caused in any of the friction rollers is set in the scope of 0.1XdY0.7Xd. Hence, the balance in performance between the simple planetary roller mechanism and the braking mechanism can be maintained.
