The invention relates to mobile telecommunications networks such as GSM and especially to EDGE (Enhanced Data rates for GSM Evolution). A mobile communications system comprises at least one Base Station Controller (BSC) or Radio Network Controller (RNC), capable of supporting a plurality of Base Transceiver Stations (BTS) or Node Bs each capable of supporting a plurality of mobile users. The BSC/RNC and BTS/Node B communicate across a circuit switched interface (Abis), characterised by means to provide an Internet Protocol (IP) tunnel between a BSC/RNC and a BTS/Node B which it supports.
