PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To determine the optimum AF(autofocus) search range and sampling position of a focus lens, according to the state of a lens when a digital camera is in an active state, to thereby attain both of shorter focusing time and focusing accuracy, and to dispense with a data setting work of setting data on the extensive AF search range and the sampling position of the focus lens, etc., according to the state of the lens. SOLUTION: The contrast detection system AF controller, is provided with a means calculating the focus lens position for focusing on an object standing at an excessive focal distance and the focus lens position for focusing on the object standing at the closest focal distance, and then, determing the focus lens moving range at AF, and a means comprehending the determined range and also determing the sampling position of the focus lens so that the depth of field is not overlaid on that of another sampling position.
