Blood evacuation container with blood spike nesting feature to be used in transfusion systems particularly autotransfusion

The disclosure relates to an apparatus, and method for a one handed procedure that encapsulates the connector of a blood evacuation system prior to reinfusion. The blood evacuation system (14) comprises a separable, flexible inner bag (38) inside an outer rigid container (16) for reinfusing shed blood drawn from the collection chamber of a chest drainage unit (12). The container further includes a lid (18) with a nest (28) formed on the outside surface of the lid for employing a one handed procedure for encapsulating a blood spike (26). The nest stores and dispenses a blood spike cover (58) used to encapsulate, and seal the distal end of the blood spike. The one handed procedure comprises the steps of disengaging the blood spike from container lid. Once inserted inside the nest the cover snaps on, and seals the blood spike. The user may then safely remove the covered blood spike from the nest without fear of contamination.
