An automatic leveling type surveying system (10) has a surveying device (16) and a leveling device (14). The surveying device has a base plate (18) with a horizontal reference surface (20), a vertical reference shaft (22) orthogonal to the horizontal reference surface, and a main body (24) adapted to rotate around the vertical reference shaft. The leveling device is fixedly connected to the base plate (18) to support the surveying device (16) and has an automatic adjuster (60) for automatically adjusting the horizontal reference surface to the horizontal. In this system (10), the surveying device and the leveling device are integrated and the leveling device automatically adjusts the surveying device to the horizontal; therefore, as compared with the conventional surveying system, the operation for manipulating the leveling screw is not required and the surveying system can be installed at a target surveying point very easily and in a short time.
