The appliance and method for detecting a register deviation involve at least one densitometer and evaluator for assessing the separate densities of inks and the combined density (7) of at least two overprinted inks of a multi-color print. The density of the register marks (1,2) is measured in at least one measuring-window (8). From the measured density values (5,6,7) , the degree of superposition over the register marks can be obtained by the evaluator in the at least one window.
