Production of wear-resistant boride layers on iron material comprises providing the iron material with a thin metallic layer before boriding to allow diffusion of boron atoms whilst other atoms such as oxygen or nitrogen are less diffused through the layer. Preferred Features: The barrier layer contains titanium, zirconium, hafnium, vanadium, niobium, tantalum, chromium, molybdenum, tungsten, copper or nickel, preferably nickel. The barrier layer is applied in the aqueous phase by galvanic or currentless chemical deposition or in the gas phase by CVD or PVD. The gas pressure is 0.1-10 mbar during boriding. The temperature of the surfaces during boriding is 500-1100 deg C.
