A system has a controller (17) initiating regeneration of a particle filter (7) in a vehicle exhaust pipe by lowering the temperature at which they burn off and delivering multiple injections of fuel into diesel engine during a normally inactive period. The controller starts and ends the regeneration according to the efficiency of a catalyst upstream of the filter. The controller controls engine air and fuel supply, a turbo-compressor and exhaust gas recycling. Preferred Features: The controller may determine catalyst efficiency by calculating it from the output of temperature sensors upstream of the catalyst and between it and the filter, or calculating it from the exhaust gas composition or the vehicle mileage. The controller determines the amount of fuel injected during regeneration.
