The method of joining two pipes involves the provision of a retaining element (30) fixed on the first pipe (10) with at least one section (31) extending in the longitudinal direction of the pipe and at least one section (32) standing away from the pipe and which slides against a stop (40) and is fixed on it. The first pipe is locked against displacement on account of the inserting of the second pipe (20) until the pipes are interconnected. The retaining element is constructed as a sleeve which is drawn, pressed or shrunk onto the end of the first pipe. An Independent claim is included for a device in the form of a sleeve-type retaining element and stop for the locking of a first pipe into which is fitted a second pipe.
