Qualitative and quantitative analysis of tissue samples comprising: (a) analyzing the expression of at least one gene in the sample (A); (b) defining a reference sample (B) from analysis of the expression of at least one gene so that the gene expression pattern of (B) is characteristic of cells of a specific type or a specific mixture of different cell types; and (c) comparing expression data for (A) and (B), is new. Qualitative and quantitative analysis of tissue samples, comprising: (a) analyzing the expression of at least one gene in the sample (A); (b) analyzing the expression of at least one gene in individual cells of defined types, or stoichiometric mixtures of different cell types; (c) defining a reference sample (B) from analysis of the expression so that the gene expression pattern of (B) is characteristic of cells of a specific type or a specific mixture of different cell types; and (d) comparing expression data for (A) and (B), is new.
