Production of a wear resistant surface coating comprises using an arc spraying process. The metal matrix of the surface coating is based on iron or nickel containing alloying amounts of chromium, boron, silicon, chromium carbide, titanium carbide, tungsten carbide, molybdenum carbide and carbon. An Independent claim is also included for the wear resistant surface coating produced by the above process. Preferred Features: The chromium amount is present in the surface coating in an amount of 3-40, preferably 20-30 weight %. The chromium carbide is present in an amount of 5-30, preferably 10-15 weight %. The silicon amount is present in an amount of 1-3, preferably 1-2 weight %.
