PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a cutting tool made of surface coated cemented carbide in which a hard coated layer exhibits an excellent abrasion-resistant property at a high speed heavy cutting condition.;SOLUTION: The hard coated layer of the cutting tool made of surface coated cemented carbide made by depositing the hard coated layer comprising composite carbonitride layers of Zr and Ti on the surface of an ultrahard substrate with the whole average layer thickness of 1-15 μm is made such that the maximum content points of Zr and nitrogen and the maximum content points of Ti and carbon are alternatively and repeatedly present with a predetermined interval in the layer thickness direction. And the hard coating layer has ingredient concentration distribution structure in which the contents of Zr, Ti; nitrogen, carbon continuously change between both the points and satisfies the following. The maximum content point of Zr is 0.80-0.98 in atomic ratio Zr/(Zr+Ti), the maximum content point of nitrogen is 0.80-0.98 in atomic ratio nitrogen/(nitrogen+carbon), the maximum content point of Ti is 0.80-0.98 in atomic ratio Ti/(Ti+Zr), and the maximum content point of carbon is 0.80-0.98 in atomic ratio carbon/(carbon+nitrogen).
