Method for operating a number of machine elements (1-3) of a machine via a CAN bus (4). The elements, each with a unique device code and function code, are linked to a controller (6) via the bus. The operating method has the following steps: sequential detection of device and function codes of each machine element by the controller; determination of the function code of an identified machine element; assignment of a CAN identification number to the identified machine element; and storage of device and function code together with the device identifier in a configuration file in the controller memory.
