Understanding and communicating with animals or speech impaired persons.

A method of improving understanding and communication between humans and animals comprises the steps of sensing, monitoring and storing animal/speech impaired human signals and correlating the signals with behavioural functions responses and intentions. A database is then created from this data, and human language phrases corresponding to the behavioural functions responses and intentions are recorded and associated with the corresponding data in the database. The phrases can then be automatically played back whenever the animal/speech impaired human makes a relevant signal. Apparatus for communicating with animals comprises a database of animal signals correlated with animal functions, responses and intentions, and recorded human phrases describing such animal functions, responses and intentions and means to sense and monitor an animal so that the human phrases may be automatically played back upon sensing the animal's function, response or intention. The playback of phrases may appear to emanate from the animal/speech impaired human as if actually speaking.
