A medical apparatus (100) comprises a flexible scope portion for accessing a patient's esophagus via the mouth, the scope portion, when in an operative position extending from a proximal end which remains outside the body to a distal end within the esophagus and an echocardiography transducer (107) coupled to the distal end of the scope portion so that, when the scope portion is in the operative position, the echocardiography transducer is at a predetermined located within the esophagus relative to the heart to perform a transesophageal echocardiography procedure in combination with a first electrode (112, 113) disposed on the scope portion for delivering a cardioversion current to the heart via the esophagus.
