PURPOSE: A steam generator and a method thereof of a drum-type washing machine are provided to control steam-generation of the steam generator by discriminating the water level in the steam generator without influence of vapor pressure. CONSTITUTION: A steam generator(330) of a drum-type washing machine comprises a first container(332) with an opened upside, arranged with a heater(331) therein, and bored through with a steam exhaust passage from the inside to the outside; a second container(334) with an opened lower side, composed of a through-area at one side and a water supply port(333) for feeding steam-generating water and combined with the first container to form a space that is closed from the outside; and a water level sensor(335) mounted in the through-area of the second container to detect the level of the steam-generating water fed through the water supply port of the second container. The water level sensor comprises the first and second sensing electrodes(S1,S2) with different lengths and a common electrode(S0) and an insulator for insulating electrically and settling the first and second sensing electrodes and the common electrode.
