Production of chlorine by oxidation of hydrogen chloride with a gas stream containing molecular oxygen is carried out in the presence of ionic liquid (I). An independent claim is also included for use of (I) as solvent and/or catalyst for the production of chlorine from hydrogen chloride by oxidation.
