An automatic polarisation plane measurement procedure uses an analyser (1) driven by a motor (2) to different exact angles in front of an intensity detector (3) with computer (4) using a nonlinear regression or single point matching algorithm to display (5) the polarisation plane angle and grade. Independent claims are included for polarisation plane measurement equipment using the procedure and for the use of a second detector for part of the light to calibrate the incident light power.
