The invention relates to compositions containing a combination of an herb of the genus Equisetum together with a film-forming agent and its use as a topical nail formulation, such as nail polish, cream, gel, lotion or foam. The present invention is also directed to the sweat of a water soluble film forming agent as an additive in a topical nail formulation. These compositions may be used to treat specific changes in nail structure, such as reduced strength, onicoschisis and nail brittleness.
