Determination of total organic carbon in a device comprising reaction zone and detection zones, by placing a sample in the reaction zone, driving off inorganic carbon, sealing the device, converting organic carbon to carbon dioxide, transferring the carbon dioxide to the detection zone and determining the carbon dioxide content from the color change of an indicator, comprises moving the reaction zone to drive off carbon dioxide resulting from conversion of inorganic carbon. - Determination of total organic carbon in a device comprising a reaction zone and a detection zone, by placing a sample in the reaction zone, driving off inorganic carbon, sealing the device, converting organic carbon to carbon dioxide gas by physical, chemical, biochemical or microbiological methods, transferring the carbon dioxide to the detection zone and determining the carbon dioxide content by means of the color change of an indicator, comprises moving the reaction zone to drive off carbon dioxide resulting from conversion of inorganic carbon. An INDEPENDENT CLAIM is also included for a test kit for determining total organic carbon as above, comprising a reaction zone and detection zone in prepackaged and storage-stable form, means for converting inorganic carbon to carbon dioxide, means for converting organic carbon to carbon dioxide, and a gas-sensitive reagent that changes color on contact with carbon dioxide.
