The substrate has a black matrix (120) formed around boundaries of a pixel region in a substrate (113). The black matrix has a resin and a curved upper surface. A color filter layer (119) overlaps the curved upper surface of the black matrix. A common electrode (130) is formed on the color filter layer. The black matrix has an opening (125) corresponding to the pixel region. An independent claim is also included for a method of fabrication of a color filter substrate.
