The method involves detecting a group of edges in a medical image of a patient based on a change in intensity between data points over a set of distances. A set of edges is selected from the group of edges, and an initial vessel boundary is determined based on the selected set of edges. A shape descriptor is applied to the initial vessel boundary to determine a final vessel boundary. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) an apparatus for detecting a boundary of a vessel in an image (2) a computer readable medium comprising computer program instructions capable of being executed in a processor to perform a method of detecting a boundary of a vessel in a medical image of a patient.
