The method involves calculating a gradient for each of a set of voxels by determining a maximum absolute gradient component relative to each adjacent voxel. Edge voxels are identified from the voxels based upon a comparison of the gradient of each voxel to a threshold edge gradient. Edges within a volume are determined using gradient data determined by evaluating a strongest gradient between each pixel and adjacent pixels. Independent claims are also included for the following: (A) a computer program for gating image data (B) a method for segmenting a structure (C) an imaging system.
