PPROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To detect appropriate inertia phase start timing and effectively reduce shifting shock in an automatic transmission for conducting a clutch-to-clutch operation. PSOLUTION: After starting downshifting, when a synchronous change rotation number dNi (=Ni-Nix) and its minimum value MinNi satisfies dNi-MinNia reference increase width A (yes for S128), an inertia phase control execution is set as it is an inertia phase start timing (S136). After starting upshifting, when the synchronous change rotation number dNi and its maximum value MaxNi satisfies MaxNi-dNia reference decrease width B (yes for S134), the inertia phase control execution is set as it is an inertia phase start timing (S136). Thus, timing capable of starting the inertia phase control appropriately and early can be obtained and probability of causing rapid change of engaging force in a start initial period of the inertia phase control is eliminated and the problem can be solved.
