PPROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method capable of selectively, surely breaking down a metallic or semiconducting carbon nanotube by simple and easy way. PSOLUTION: The semiconducting carbon nanotube 2 or metallic carbon nanotube 3 is selectively broken down by irradiating the mixture thereof with an energy beam 5 such as laser beam. The break-down method uses the energy beam having the energy components which are resonance-absorbed by the metallic or semiconducting carbon nanotube 3 or 2 to be broken down.
