A device and a method for playing contents based on a watching point of a series contents are provided to play the contents from the previous watching point when the user requests playback of the contents even if the user selects one contents among a plurality of contents stored in a series by storing the watching point of the previous watched contents. An information extractor(210) extracts a series and program title for the predetermined contents based on an EPG(Electronic Program Guide) of the contents produced in the series. A controller(280) generates a file name based on the extracted series and program title. An item generator(220) generates items for the contents based on the extracted series and program title, and the generated the file name. A searcher(250) extracts a watching point value by searching playback point information corresponding to the file name when user requests the playback of the contents based on the file name. A storage part(230) stores the generated item and the extracted information. A mode setting part(240) sets up the playback mode of the contents requested by the user. A watching point checker(260) updates the watching point value changed by periodically checking the watching point of the played contents. A recorder(270) records the contents based on the series information of the contents.
