The method involves irradiating the substance to be identified, which can be in any location within the container, with a neutron source, recording and measuring both the thermalised and also the fast back-scattered neutrons, achieving independence from geometric factors by forming the quotient of the signals of the fast and thermalised neutrons and calibrating the measurement result using known substance specimens.
