The device has electrical supply paths of different current directions, subjected with electrical voltage, for controlling the rotating direction of an electric motor (15). The paths are switched by the operation of the respective supply switching units (2a-2d). A switching unit (5a), which is switchable independent of the supply switching units, is provided in the electrical supply path. The unit controls the safety-relevant rotation direction of the electric motor. An independent claim is also included for a method for releasing and blocking the supply of electrical energy to an electric motor.
