The critical state detection process is used for resistance heating in a domestic appliance. An emission spectrum of the resistance heating is measured during operation, and alterations to the spectrum are made to enable a decision to be taken as to whether operation of the appliance should continue. A domestic appliance with such a detection system is also described.
