The mechanism has a steering cable for feeding steering moment applied by a driver using a steering handle for adjusting steered wheels of a motor vehicle. A hydraulic actuator (2) controlled by a servo valve e.g. rotary slide valve (1), feeds steering assistance moment, and a torsional moment sensor (3) arranged in the steering cable detects the steering moment. The valve is arranged outside of the steering cable and is mechanically decoupled from the steering cable, where the valve is externally influenced by a control unit (8) and an electric motor (11).
